Song du Jour: The Gay Blades “Britt Daniel Stole My Girl”

True story.

I used to be an editor for this magazine called Alternative Press, and I used to have this podcast on which I would very, very, so very poorly introduce songs by unsigned bands who were quite often awesome.

During the planning stage of the first show, when we were just starting to work out exactly what the podcast would be, we decided it would be the coolest of all beans if we had one of the prior unsigned bands I “discovered” write a theme song. (Discovering an unsigned band is like “discovering” a continent that already has a bunch of people living on it.)

Although I love each of my discoveries equally, I actually love the Gay Blades a lot more.

(Oh, I should’ve mentioned this was between their first and second albums.)

This was between their first and second albums.

I asked them to do a ditty with limited vocals except for the name of the show and loosely base it around the intro to their song “O Shot.” It needed to be thirty-seconds long.

They said, “We’ll give you thirty-one.”

Then, like the day before I was supposed to record the show — really kind of down to the wire — they sent me the long-awaited MP3.

At that point, I really had no choice but to blindly trust that they did an awesome-sauce job.

As I anxiously listened for the first time, I noticed that my iTunes said it was three minutes-long.

“That’s queer,” I thought.

Then as the music kicked in, it became suddenly and startlingly clear that this theme song had little in common with “O Shot.” It was, in fact, a freestyle rap that referenced detailed sex acts and vaguely accused me of being racist.

“That’s queer,” I thought.

After about 20 minutes of me thinking the podcast would be canceled before it even aired, I got another e-mail with the real theme song.

And it was pretty sick. And a lot like “O Shot,” but not really. It was pretty perfect.

Something like a year later, the GBs released their sophomore album — featuring the same riff used in my theme song in a fully formed one called “Mick Jagger.”

It’s about the closest I’ll ever come to actually writing an actual song, which actually isn’t that close at all.

(Maybe I’ll ask if I can release that freestyle rap sometime.)

Then, just the other day, I received this tweet from @thegayblades: “Hey dad! You hear about this shit?”

I could only assume that they meant their new EP coming out in February. You can download the song (which is badass, btw) for free on their Facebook page, but you can also shell out $2 for the whole thing here.

In the meantime, I hope I didn’t fuck up their whole marketing plan by embedding the song above.
